MOQ, Samples and Lead Times: Sourcing Chargers and Cables from Shenzhen

Why MOQs exist, what a lead time is actually made of, how to run a sample round properly, and how to plan around the production calendar.

The three numbers that decide your project calendar

MOQ, sample time and lead time are where sourcing projects succeed or slip. They are also the three things buyers most often leave vague — which is why they cause the most disputes. Here is what is actually behind each number.

Why MOQ exists

A minimum order quantity is not an arbitrary gate. Production lines are scheduled in runs, component suppliers sell materials in minimum quantities, and custom packaging has its own printing minimums. Stock catalog models carry a lower MOQ than custom projects for the same reason: everything already exists except your branding. When a supplier quotes an MOQ, ask what drives it — the answer tells you whether there is room to negotiate or whether it is a hard floor set by their own suppliers.

Take the sample round seriously

Samples usually take days, not weeks, and they are the cheapest risk reduction you will ever buy. Test them at full load, check heat, verify fast-charge protocols with your target devices, and inspect the details a catalog photo cannot show. Do not skip sampling even for a design you have bought before — production staff, materials and even molds change over time. For what to test, see our factory verification checklist.

What a lead time is actually made of

  • Material preparation — components and packaging ordered against your order.
  • Production — assembly, then full-load aging and line testing on every unit.
  • QC and packing — sampling inspection against the agreed AQL, then carton packing.
  • Shipping — booking space, which in peak season is its own lead time.

Custom projects add mold-making and trial shots before any of the above, which is why a custom housing adds weeks, not days. Get the lead time in writing together with the inspection standard, so “ready” means the same thing to both sides.

Plan around the calendar

Chinese New Year closes factories for several weeks and production takes time to ramp back up — place orders early or accept the delay knowingly. Q4 shipping space tightens on the main routes, so confirm freight early if you need stock for the holiday season.

botwo quotes MOQ and lead time per model, because a stock 20W charger and a custom multi-port station are different conversations. Tell us the model and your target date, and we will give you a realistic answer.
